he following image depicts a one-page letter from Commodore Smith to William Hirst on June 13, 1862. This letter reports that the Submarine Propeller Alligator is ready for service, directs her crew to be paid by the Paymaster of the Navy Yard, and states that the Alligator is to be deployed at first conveyance. Provided by EMCS (SS) Jim Christley, USN (ret), the original is available at the National Archives and Records Service.
