The Green Team will create an environmental education garden to be used school-wide.  Sustainability will be the overriding theme of the garden with lessons focused on organic gardening, composting, climate change, and human impact on the environment including San Francisco Bay and the oceans.

Ross Elementary School (Marin County)

All K-8 grades will be engaged in the growing and maintaining of a native plant garden at school including plant propagation and natural pest control.  Students will also be involved in activities focused on the health and protection of Ross Creek and local watersheds.  All students will participate in a weekend of marking storm drains along Ross Creek.

Blackstock Junior High School

6th grade students in an after-school science class will use their water testing skills to explore and learn about Ormond Beach watershed, Ventura River and Santa Clara watersheds. Through hands-on activities, students will study biomes, marine habitats, endangered species and related environmental issues.  Student projects and observations will be shared at the Oxnard Earth Day Festival as well as on their “Ocean Guardian” school website.

Carpinteria Middle School (Santa Barbara County) 

6th – 8th grade students meet after school to explore local watersheds, ecosystems and marine habitats through field trips and activities that include science and language arts. Students will be involved in projects that promote ocean awareness in their school and local community.  The year-long class will culminate in an overnight field trip on Santa Cruz Island.

San Juan School
(San Benito County)

Ocean Literacy Principles, watershed awareness and “pollution solutions” will be integrated into the hands-on lessons in the San Juan School garden. A cleanup strategy at the school and along the bordering creek will be initiated and implemented by the students.  Students and teachers will also participate in a habitat restoration project along Monterey Bay shoreline.

Pajaro Valley High School (Santa Cruz County)

All students will learn about local watersheds, environmental issues affecting their community, and watershed conservation through the language arts and science curriculum, community service projects, field trips to local organizations, and hands-on activities in the school garden.   A school-wide recycling program will be designed and implemented.

Carmel Middle School  (Monterey County)

A permanent 3-D scale model of the Carmel River watershed will be constructed and displayed in the native plant garden of the Hilton Bialek Habitat at Carmel Middle School.  The model will support the on-going school-wide and community outreach classes in watershed health and conservation.  In addition, a kiosk featuring student created interpretive signs of watershed information, student projects and best practices will be built and featured in the garden.

Juaquin Miller Elementary
(Alameda County) 

The JMStream Team Project will continue with a focus on the local Sausal Creek watershed.  Students will experience a variety of hands-on activities that integrate earth and life science curriculum, field trips sites and partnerships with local organizations.  Students will educate the local community about watershed issues through their native plant sales, projects with Friends of Sausal Creek and participation with other schools in a week-long watershed health program.

Ocean Literacy Principles will be integrated at every K-8 grade level through a planned series of developed field trips and classroom instruction.  Grade specific ocean steward learning outcomes and community impact outcomes will orient the goals of the school-wide program.  Students will participate in local dune restoration and beach cleanups.
