At Full Capacity: Helping Partners Manage Their Protected Areas

Fish don't know when they reach the boundary of a protected area; neither do whales, or sea turtles, or seabirds. So to make sure we have the greatest protection for sanctuary resources, we work with partners from around the world. Often that work involves sharing the lessons learned in 40 years of managing marine protected areas, sometimes informally through information exchanges and sometimes through more formal capacity building efforts. In 2005, the sanctuary system established the nearly fully externally funded International Marine Protected Area Management Capacity Building Program, and seven years later, in early 2012, the program had trained over 2000 partners and colleagues around the world, in more than a hundred training sessions and workshops.

Our capacity building program helps people who are managing marine protected areas around the world, but this is only one of many marine related careers that you or the young people in your life might want to consider. Investigate other marine careers at: Monterey Bay Aquarium, Association of Zoos & Aquariums, and Alaska Fisheries Science Center
