While one may likely see birds flying within the CINMS boundaries, one may also see dolphins "flying" out of Sanctuary waters. The common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is the most abundant cetacean species off the California coast, and may be seen traveling in pods of one thousand or more, swimming at speeds up to 25 miles per hour!! Common dolphins are known to dive to depths of 21 meters (70 feet) and can stay underwater for at least 15 minutes before surfacing. (photo: Shane Anderson)
