There are an estimated 95,000 hectares of mangroves in Monroe County. Many of them are mangrove islands in Florida Bay and the Keys nearshore waters. There are three species of mangroves: red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle); black mangrove (Avicennia germinanas); and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa). (photo: Florida Keys NMS)
