In the 1890s , sponging was second only to cigar-making in economic importance in the Florida Keys. Today, commercial sponging still takes place, but on a much smaller scale. While driving along highway US 1, one can see sponge fisherman working the shallow waters around the Keys. (photo: Scott Larosa)
