Over the past 20 years the coral community at the Flower Gardens has been been monitored. A contract between NOAA and MMS (Minerals Management Service) is awarded every few years to an outside contractor to undertake the research. Part of the monitoring effort includes measuring the light that reaches the reef crest. As is seen here, the marine environment is very harsh on instruments. (photo: Frank and Joyce Burek)
