A young calf performing a back flip in Maalaea Bay, Maui. Spectacular behaviors such as these (known as breaching) can easily be seen from the shores of all the main Hawaiian Islands. Shoreline whale watching is recommended over boat tours since it has less of an impact on the humpback whale and its environment. Whale watching regulations makes it unlawful to approach a whale closer than 100 yards. (photo: Dave Glickman)
