Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary occupies one of the most productive regions of the planet-the North Pacific Temperate zone. Marine and terrestrial systems alike generate life in uncommon abundance and diversity. The influence of the ocean shapes the great forests of the Olympic Peninsula. In turn, rivers flowing off the land carry important nutrients, and sediments and are corridors for important species like salmon. (photo: Nancy Sefton)
