Pillar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus), although beautiful, is rare in the Florida Keys. Pillar coral is unusual in that its polyps are usually extended for feeding during the day. Most hard corals feed at night. Sanctuary Scientist Harold Hudson has several ongoing projects involving pillar coral transplants and the species growth rates. (photo: Harold Hudson)
