This picture clearly illustrates the two different species of brain coral found at the Flower Gardens. In the foreground is boulder brain coral (Colpophyllia natans) - note the "closed valleys" and wider ridges and grooves. In the background is the symmetrical brain coral (Diploria strigosa.) If you look closely you'll see a rough fileclam (Lima scabra) wedged inbetween the two colonies on the right. (photo: Frank and Joyce Burek)
