Monitor Then (1862)

The battle between the U.S.S. Monitor and the Confederate Ironclad Virginia was the subject for a United States postage stamp in 1995. The Monitor is the vessel near the lower portion of the stamp. (image: United States Postal Service)

A song written about the battle between the U.S.S. Monitor and the Ironclad Virginia. The Virginia was built on the remains of the U.S.S. Merrimac, hence the title of the song. The author was obviously a Union sympathizer. (image: United States Library of Congress )
