Hawaii Ocean Guardian Kids Club and Contest
The Hawai`i Ocean Guardian Kids Club and Contest was part of the 2008 International Year of the Reef observance, and presented by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (NMS) and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. Youngsters in kindergarten through eighth grade were invited to express their insights and observations about the ocean and sensitive coral reef ecosystems through the creation of original stories, poetry or works of art.
Approximately 300 entries from around the country were submitted and evaluated by judges who work in the marine conservation arena.
Winning students won one of several prizes including a two-night stay at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach in Waikiki, Hawai’i, Oceanic Aeris prize pack, Waikiki Aquarium passes, Roxy DVD, Flik Flak Swatch Watch; and an Outrigger Island Explorer Backpack, which contains a variety of educational, ocean-themed items. The contest was sponsored by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, NOAA, Swatch, Roxy, Oceanic Aeris, and the Waikiki Aquarium.
