Gray Whales

December 2023

In the winter months of December and January, gray whales can be seen passing by California during their southbound migration to Mexico.

Gray whales make one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal, traveling about 10,000 miles round-trip and in some cases upwards of 14,000 miles. Traveling past heavily populated regions along the West Coast, gray whales are at risk of boat collisions or entanglement in fishing gear.

To help these graceful animals, always give them plenty of space. If you see an entangled whale, you can help out by reporting the entanglement.
