Helldiver Wreck

On August 31, 1944, US Navy pilot William E. Dill ditched his damaged SB2C Helldiver near Kihei, Maui, during combat training maneuvers. Both Dill and his radioman made it ashore safely, but the aircraft remained on the seafloor. This World War II-era dive bomber is now a recreational dive site protected by the Sunken Military Craft Act. The white corals in the photo were experiencing coral bleaching that occurred throughout the Hawaiian Islands in 2015.
