Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary appears to be a vast open expanse of water that can be interrupted by the startling and amazing sight of a humpback whale ( Megaptera novaeangliae) breaching out from the depths.

Common views in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary are the flukes of diving humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Researchers name these whales based on the distinctive patterns on the undersides of their tails. This whale was named "Springboard."

The Northern right whale (Eubalaena glacialis), is an endangered whale species threatened by vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing nets off the East Coast. Proposed Hudson Canyon National Marine Sanctuary aims to protect these animals with "special protection zones" and during migration north to feeding grounds in Labrador.
