Fishing to me is some of the best peace there is. The beauty of the outdoors is therapy for the soul and ‘reel’ tranquility.

How many years have you been fishing?

I have been fishing and working in the waters of my Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary for 28 years. I started pin-heading and deck-handing on crew boats when I was 11 years old.

What should everyone know about fishing in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary?

We are in one of the coolest places on the planet. The upwelling and currents bring in an abundance of wildlife and migrating whales, and the landscape of the Channel Islands change with the seasons. We have world-famous kelp forests that travelers from all over come to visit.

Why do you fish in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary?

Everything from the sunrises, the smells and odors of the water to the adrenaline of the bite and fight; the landscaping of the water, islands, and wildlife to the harvest that goes on the table to feed the family.

How do you take care of your special fishing places?

I believe fishing within limits is very important. Keep only what you are going to harvest, leave some breeders, and follow the rules and laws set by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. As a member of the of Coastal Conservation Association California Chapter, I, along with my team, support healthy fish habitats and fish hatchery programs by promoting responsible angling, teaching kids about stewardship with the Reel Guppy Outdoor Program ENGLISH / ESPAÑOL, and spearheading environmental efforts like coastal beach clean ups.
