Pre-designation advisory council for Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary to hold final meeting on July 31, 2024

The advisory council that was created prior to the designation of NOAA’s Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary will meet for the last time on July 31, 2024. During the meeting, NOAA will close out the pre-designation advisory council and any remaining business and discuss the creation of a new council to advise NOAA on the management of the sanctuary.

The pre-designation council was established in 2019 to help bring members of the local community together to provide advice to NOAA, to serve as a liaison with the sanctuary nominating community, and to assist in guiding NOAA through the sanctuary designation process.

With the designation of Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary -- the 16th sanctuary in the National Marine Sanctuary System, and the third in the Great Lakes -- a new advisory council will be established.

The advisory council meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. ET. The meeting will be held at the Sterling Nature Center, 15730 Jensvold Road, Sterling, NY. The public is invited to attend.

NOAA will discuss the revised seats and application process for the new advisory council and address questions from council members and the public. Public comment will be taken at approximately 7:45 p.m.
